Are you a toxic concertgoer?

Concerts are about shared energy and excitement, but thoughtless actions can quickly kill the vibe

To steer clear of being labeled with “main character syndrome” or exhibiting “Karen-ism,” here’s a look at toxic habits to avoid and proper etiquette for all concertgoers.

1. Don’t hog the spotlight

Constantly recording yourself with a bright flash disturbs the ambiance and creates a jarring experience for fellow concertgoers. Instead of recording every moment, limit yourself to a few quick videos and avoid using the flash for extended periods.

2. Don’t block views

Bringing huge signs blocks the view of those behind you. While it’s fun to express your enthusiasm, be mindful not to obstruct others’ enjoyment. Stick to holding smaller signs at chest level, and at theater shows or classical concerts, avoid standing during the performance.

3. Keep conversations to a minimum

Chatting loudly during the show distracts those who try to enjoy the music. It takes away from the overall experience and makes it hard for others to hear the performance. Instead, save your conversations for the breaks between songs.

4. Respect the artists

Throwing items at performers, especially heavy or potentially dangerous ones, endangers the artists and disrupts the experience for everyone else. It’s natural to want attention from your favorite artist, but it’s crucial to act respectfully and considerately.

5. Sing along, but don’t shriek

Excessive singing or shrieking drowns out the artist everyone comes to see, making it tough for those around you to enjoy the performance. Feel free to express your excitement, but keep your volume in check so everyone can share the musical experience together.

@urthaiboy_ Whoever you were screaming like a dumbass bitch i hope you realize you pissed everyone off including laufey 😂 #laufey #laufeytour #concert #fyp #dallas #winspearoperahouse ♬ original sound – urthaiboy

6. Be mindful of alcohol consumption

Drinking excessively and causing disruptions creates a negative environment for those around you. It’s fine to enjoy a drink or two, but be wary of your limits. Keeping your behavior in check ensures that everyone can have a great time.

7. Follow venue rules

Ignoring venue policies, like sneaking in prohibited items, leads to issues for everyone. Please familiarize yourself with the venue’s rules and respect them. These rules exist to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees.

8. Foster a positive atmosphere

Shaming or judging others for their excitement or attire creates an unwelcoming atmosphere. Remember, you don’t come to such events to spread negativity, you are to enjoy the music and the experience. Everyone experiences music differently, so embrace the unique ways others express their enthusiasm—as long as it’s not disruptive.

Concert etiquette differs

Concert etiquette isn’t just a set of unwritten rules; it’s the key to unlocking an unforgettable experience for everyone in the crowd. Remember, though, that each show has its own unique vibe and guidelines, so take a moment to soak in the setting and adapt your behavior accordingly. Let’s make every show a celebration of music, community, and respect!
