Jolianne’s latest song ‘Plain Girl’ is the NBSB’s anthem

“Plain Girl” is the second single off her debut EP coming in January 2025

We interviewed singer-songwriter Jolianne just this July 2024 after the release of her single “I’ll Be Somebody You Want.” Then, she talked about her growth as an artist since she joined Careless Music in 2021 and the would-be direction of her first-ever EP.

“I live like a grandma. I would always write about things that I’d never experienced. I was always writing about things my friends were going through or things I’d read about,” she shared in our last conversation. “But recently, I’ve embraced the fact that I do live like a grandma and I’ve embraced that in my songwriting and that’s going to show in the next couple of songs.”

Five months later and with the release of her latest single, “Plain Girl,” Jolianne, continues to embrace her quirks—particularly, her never-changing single status.

“Plain Girl” is the second track off her debut EP coming in January 2025 under Careless Music and Sony Music Entertainment. It’s a playful yet honest song that talks about and makes fun of her “no-boyfriend-since-birth” (NBSB) status—yes, surprise.

“‘Plain Girl’ is the one song in my catalog that’s most representative of me. My team asked me when I would write a love song that’s true to my experiences. I told them, ‘When I get a boyfriend’ and they were like, ‘Maybe just embrace that and write about it,’” she said in our previous interview.

“I was so against it because I was embarrassed. I was being so honest about how nothing was going on in my love life. But, I do think it’s a good sentiment to share because there are so many people who go through the exact same thing.”

I want to be someone’s second to none
But it’s more likely I turn to a nun
I could be wrong and I wish that I was
I wish that I was
‘Cause god

Oh, it just makes me wonder
Am I not in my bloom?
‘Cause, then, if this is it,
Well, then god, am I doomed

In “Plain Girl,” Jolianne expresses the tiresome feelings of loneliness and inadequacy she’s felt over the years, but without wallowing in self-pity or self-deprecation.

“I didn’t want it to come across as overly self-deprecating. Instead, I wanted it to sound like I was poking fun at my situation. This is why I paired the lyrics with dreamlike melodies and production,” explains Jolianne.

“Plain Girl” is the second single from her highly anticipated debut EP that will reportedly explore themes of yearning, love, and heartbreak, with the same mix of emotional candor and charismatic wit that makes “Plain Girl” so captivating.

Jolianne’s “Plain Girl” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide. Watch the live performance video on her official YouTube channel.
