As they fly into Manila for the National Basketball Training Center Tournament, hundreds of young Fil-Am basketball players are also bringing in shoes and basketballs to donate
While Filipinos are now becoming known in a wider range of sports, we can’t deny the place basketball will always hold in the heart of our culture. It’s a “way of life,” so to speak—and for many, simply having a hoop and a ball is enough to enjoy the game.
Basketball-centric organizations like the CourtKicks Foundation and Fil-Nation Select are making it a goal to bring the sport to more Filipino children by providing the essentials that would allow them to enjoy the game safely and comfortably.
This year, around 400 young Fil-Am basketball players from the US, Europe, and Australia are flying into Manila to participate in the National Basketball Training Center Tournament, and they’re bringing with them basketballs, athletic shoes, and water bottles for kids who live (and play) at the Tenement in Taguig—which has now become known for its large basketball court murals, and having been recognized as the best basketball court in the world in 2022.

Aside from shoes brought by the Fil-Am basketball players, the Laker Foundation is also donating balls for the residents. Filipino American comedian Jokoy and Project J.O.Y. are also lending their support to the cause.
By providing these kids with the essentials, they hope they can help the young, aspiring athletes to “keep chasing their dreams.”
“For these children, your donation isn’t just gear—it’s hope, opportunity, and a reminder that they’re not forgotten. Together, we can help them play with confidence and joy,” they said in a release.
On April 5, they will also be holding basketball games at the Tenement Basketball Court, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
