I feel bad. Because I cannot count the number of times I picked up Nora Ephron’s “I Feel Bad About My Neck” in book stores, only to put it down again in favor of another book. I’ll get it next time, I kept telling myself. But I never did. And now she’s dead.
As tributes to Nora Ephron began flooding my Twitter and Facebook feeds, I discovered that while I’ve missed out on the fun of reading her books, I’ve enjoyed her writing numerous times, thanks to the brilliant screenplays she’s written. “Sleepless In Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail” will always be on my list of favorites—I still watch these films every few months. I loved “When Harry Met Sally” and “Julie &
Julia.” I enjoyed “Hanging Up,” “Bewitched” and “Lucky Numbers.” But she’s written and directed even more movies that I have yet to see.
And so I am declaring this weekend my Nora Ephron marathon weekend. I will finally pick up her books and I will devote time to watching her films, including the ones I haven’t seen before.
Here are the titles you need if you want a crash course on Nora Ephron. And get the tissue ready because Todd Purdum is right. In his VanityFair.com tribute to Nora, he wrote, “She was a master at making you smile and cry at the same time.”
