Tim Tayag—how he keeps as fresh as his jokes

TIM Tayag

Fun-loving Tim Tayag never fails to see the lighter side of everything, be it here or abroad.

The country’s pioneer of point-of-view stand-up comedy has been splitting sides at venues like Punch Line in San Francisco, Comedy Stop in Chicago, Athlete’s Village in Doha and the CCP and the Music Museum in Manila.

From comedy, the Fil-American has crossed over to TV with his international travel TV program “On-Foot” (on the Living Asia Channel) and live standup comedy series “Comedy Masala” (on Sony Be TV).

Despite a hectic schedule, Tayag cherishes time at home with the family.

Here are things that help him keep the laughs coming.

Body

TIM with his wife and daughters.

My biggest influence is… my wife. I value her opinion when it comes to style since she’s the one I really want to impress. I bought this pair of shades, which I thought made me look handsome (that’s what the Chinese vendor said, “Sooo hansam!”). I was walking around feeling so confident and Brad Pitt-ish when I ran into my wife who immediately shouted, “Take those off!”

Apparently, I bought sunglasses with women in mind.

My source of joy is… our baby daughter. She’s also our entertainment. She’s 2 years old but has been talking non-stop and makes us laugh. Right now she’s into changing lyrics of nursery rhymes, like she’ll sing “Twinkle twinkle, little poopoo!” She’s our boss. She bosses me, my wife and her older sister around.

I typically splurge on… two things—investments and books. I am not a worldly possession kind of guy.

I invest in property rentals and I buy physical books and Kindle books.

Mostly, I splurge more on my family. Buying two shirts for myself is already splurging.

One thing I can’t travel without is… any book that I’m reading. Sometimes I think, “Nah, I don’t need to bring a book,” then I end up getting bored, especially on the plane. Then I got to listen to the life story of the person next to me but I don’t have the heart to tell him to shut up and that he has bad breath.

The one electronic gadget I can’t live without is… my laptop. It’s where I do most of my work. I write jokes. I edit videos. I record ideas. I watch movies. I even watch my kids on it. Spy on what they’re doing. I also do bank transactions and monitor my wife’s shopping transactions on it.

Right now I’m addicted to… buko juice. It is my new panacea. It has more potassium than a banana so it can prevent cramps when I’m playing basketball or doing other exercises. And it’s available everywhere.

THE BODY Shop White Musk for Men

My staple piece of clothing is… jeans. I’m really a laid-back jeans-kind of guy. With jeans you don’t have to think much. You can just put them on and match them with any shirt. Or when I finally get my abs, I can just wear jeans and nothing on top.

The one piece of clothing I have a lot of are… socks and boxers. I put them on my wish list last Christmas and everyone gave me those two items. So now, I own 50 boxers and 100 pairs of socks. If I had to pick, it would be socks. You can never have too many fresh socks.

My signature scent is… whatever cologne someone gives me for Christmas. Right now, it’s White Musk from The Body Shop. Not really sure what musk is, but it seems to “musk” any bad smell. I can’t believe I just did a pun. Please don’t pardon that or it will encourage me to do more.

Barber or salon? If I’m shooting for a TV show, I go to a salon because IT can style my hair better for television. But I really prefer the barber. No frills, just get straight to the haircut. Plus, my barber gives me that neck massage at the end.

LOREAL TechniArt Clay

The one grooming product I swear by is… Perspirock. I discovered it only recently and I spray it on my armpits twice a week and it keeps me from sweating. It really works. Sometimes when I’m onstage, the bright lights make my kilikili wet and it doesn’t look good. Perspirock has helped me solve that problem.
