Here’s a fool-proof way (our moms swear by it) to clean your silverware without spending too much on branded silver cleaners.
What you’ll need:
1 quart hot water (but cool enough not to scald you)
1 tbsp fabric softener
1 tbsp salt
Aluminum foil
Small plastic tub (optional)
Plastic gloves (optional, for those with sensitive skin)
Line the bottom of your sink or plastic tub with aluminum foil. Dissolve the fabric softener and salt in hot water. Place your tarnished silver, making sure it’s both touching the foil and covered by the water. It should be clean after 10 seconds.
If the piece is badly tarnished, you may need to rub it with a soft cloth after treatment.
Tip: this also works well for silver and gold jewelry but not advisable for silverware that has been “antiqued.”
