Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Midnight Sun’ is finally seeing the light of day (minus the sparkles)

It’s 2008. You’re on your family’s home computer, reading the first 50 pages of “Midnight Sun.” The next thing you know, you’ve reached the end of the PDF, attempting to scroll further until you realized it’s futile. That was it? What was in Edward’s head during the tree-hopping scene? Why can’t Carlisle be my vampire dad? What kind of literal cliffhanger was that?!

So many questions were left unanswered. But more than a decade later, our curiosity will finally be sated. “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer is set to release “Midnight Sun,” a companion novel to the franchise that retells the story of “Twilight” through the eyes of Edward Cullen.

Fans will remember that “Midnight Sun’s” original release was called off when a copy of the manuscript was leaked online. Meyer posted the novel’s partial draft on her website, allowing readers to see its initial concepts. Since then, Twihards hadn’t expected the novel to ever see the light of day—not because it will sparkle in the sunlight, but because the author had remained firm on her decision. Meyer referred to the work as “an exercise in character development that got wildly out of hand.”

“Though I didn’t have time to work on it right away, the idea of letting Edward have his chance to speak stuck with me. I couldn’t shake it,” says Meyer. “I found myself thinking his words in the middle of the night and jotting down phrases he would use while I was waiting in line at the post office. As soon as I finished my real work, I sat down and let Edward get his say.”

Times are definitely a-changin’, as “Midnight Sun” is set to drop on Aug. 4. With the whole saga on Netflix and the occasional meme seen on Twitter, the “Twilight” renaissance is in full swing. No baseball bats and Muse songs required.
