Taiwan film fest pays tribute to director Hou Hsiao-Hsien

“THE BOYS of Fengkuei”

The works of award-winning director Hou Hsiao-Hsien will be featured in this year’s Taiwan Film Festival, whose third installment will be held at the Shang Cineplex (Edsa Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong City), Aug. 3-6.

“Hou Hsiao-Hsien is one of the most well-known directors in Taiwan and in international circles. Also, his films are critically acclaimed abroad and well-received by Taiwanese,” Wellington Wei, Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office director, said.

“DUST in the Wind”

“Three Times” (2005), which was nominated in the 2005 Cannes film festival for the Palm d’Or and which won several international awards, will be screened. The movie is a trilogy—“A Time for Love,” “A Time for Freedom,” and “A Time for Youth”—covering three different generations.

“The Boys of Fengkuei” (1983), which won the Golden Montgolfiere award of the Nantes Three Continents Film Festival, will also be shown. It is about the struggle of three men from Fengkuei island who move to the city to find work.

“THREE Times”

“Dust in the Wind” (1987), and “A Time to Live, a Time to Die” (1985) will also be screened.

Aside from the full-length films, four documentaries from various Taiwanese filmmakers will also be showcased.

“We also wanted to introduce more documentaries this year, because it seems the documentary-film genre is largely underappreciated by audiences, and we want to change that,” Wei said.

“THE MAN Who Plants Trees”

Taiwanese documentaries to be shown are “Classmates,” “Grandma’s Hairpin,” “Stars” and “The Man Who Plants Trees.”

Shangri-La Plaza and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office have been bringing Taiwanese films to the Philippines since 2010 to exhibit the culture and beauty of Taiwan and to promote Taiwanese filmmakers.
