“Adventure Time” is finally giving us the Bubbline spin-off we deserve

I don’t know about you, but it’s been two years and I still haven’t gotten over the ending of “Adventure Time”―especially this part.

Adventure Time | Saving Princess Bubblegum | Cartoon Network

It’s reminiscent of the feeling of being heavily invested in a multi-chapter slow-burn fanfic: Twenty chapters in and the main ship finally locks eyes. Only 20 more to go and they’ll be holding hands soon.

Kidding aside, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline (collectively dubbed as Bubbline) are undoubtedly a popular pair, even before they were canon. The finale confirmed every hint the show dropped that alluded to their romance but left a lot of fans (including me) with quite a cliffhanger.

Fret not, ‘cause our favorite sapphic duo is finally getting the spin-off they deserve.

In the four-episode series “Adventure Time: Distant Lands,” we see more of our beloved characters, from their past to possibly their future post-war.

There’s only one episode so far (and disappointingly only available on HBO Max) but guess what? The next one, titled “Obsidian,” will be all about Princess Bubblegum and Marceline’s romance.

Marceline’s voice actress Olivia Olson confirmed this on a “Distant Lands” panel at the virtual Comic Con.

“The way that the finale ended is just so perfect… It was really cool to be able to see some of the things in the past that happened between them, and how it will affect their future moving forward,” she said, even giving us a preview of “Monster,” a song Marceline will sing in “Distant Lands.”

Beyond the canon ship, Olsen also shared some insight about Marceline as a vital character in the “Adventure Time” storyline. She fondly talked about the vampire queen as a character who is in the process of healing through music, slowly allowing herself to be vulnerable around the people she cares about.

“Ultimately, she can’t move forward with Bubblegum unless she tackles some of her own issues. You can’t really put your energy onto somebody until you figure out your own stuff that you’re dealing with.”

With all the things left unsaid and questions left unanswered in the original finale, we’re definitely looking forward to the Bubbline special and the rest of the “Distant Lands” episodes.
