MANILA, Philippines—An exciting array of musical performances awaits audiences as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) sets the stage for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s 30th Concert Season 2012-2013 under the baton of its music director, Olivier Ochanine.
On September 21, 2012 at the Philamlife Auditorium, the PPO opens the night with “Orchestral Fireworks” led by Maestro Ochanine as they perform Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Orchestra, Nielsen’s Aladdin Suite and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.
Entitled “The Mysterious Mountain”, Maestro Ochanine leads the PPO in performing Bottesini’s Concert No. 2 with double bass soloist Kurt Muroki on October 19. The program also includes Prokofieff’s
Lieutenant Kijé Suite and Hohvaness’ Mysterious Mountain Symphony.
On November 16, Japanese conductor Yoshikazu Fukumura leads the PPO in performing Delius’ Irmelin Prelude, Kodaly’s Dances of Galanta and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.
PPO ends the year with “De Leon and Arutunian” on December 14 with two soloists, Raymond de Leon, trumpet and Iñaki Etxepare, cello with Herminigildo Ranera conducting. They will perform Bedrick Smetana’s Moldau (Vltava), Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto, and Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite.
Maestro Ochanine conducts the PPO as it ushers in the New Year on January 25, 2013 with Ryan Cayabyab’s New Work for Violin and Orchestra featuring PPO’s Associate concertmaster Dino Decena. The program also includes, Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 “Spring”.
Listen to the vocal prowess of Korean soprano Hyunah Yu and Filipino tenor Arthur Espiritu as they join the PPO led by Maestro Ochanine on February 22 in “Shakespearean Delights”. Performances consist of
Nicolai’s Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor, Various works for Soprano & Tenor and orchestra based on Shakespeare, Mendelssohn’s Suite to ‘A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream’ and Walton’s Suite from Henry V.
Billed as “The Maestro’s Maestro”, conductor Mark Gibson leads the PPO in Georges Bizet’s Jeux d’Enfants, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe, and Camille Saint Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3 on March 22 with Gao Can, violin.
The PPO concert season ends on April 19, 2013 under the baton of Maestro Ochanine entitled “Mahler’s Fifth” with the winner of the PPO Piano Concerto Competition, and Gustav
Mahler’s Symphony No.5.
Except for September 21, all PPO season concerts will be staged at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) at 8 pm.
