Lapu-Lapu City’s mayor isn’t having Ez Mil’s lyrics

Apparently, Lapu Lapu City’s local government is not having it with Ez Mil’s bars. This is after the controversial rapper performed his song “Panalo” on Wish 107.5’s YouTube, with the lyrics: “Nanalo na ako nung una pa na pinugutan si Lapu sa Mactan.”

The lines give us the historical scene of the 1521 Battle of Mactan: Spanish colonizers led by Ferdinand Magellan fought it out with native Filipinos who were defending their land from the foreign invaders.   However, there was no written account of Lapu-Lapu’s death. For your historical trivia, take a look at this.

On Feb. 4, 2021, the rapper apologized for the line and explained that it was just “exaggerated,” a device to “drive traffic.” He said, “It’s inaccurate but he still died. He’s dead right now. It’s not overall factual in a way.”

Following this interesting saga, Lapu Lapu City mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan has just expressed his thoughts. Today, it was reported that Chan wants to consider the rapper “persona non grata” and is ardently endorsing the proposal to the city council based on the offensive lines from his song.

Meanwhile, netizens are quick to point out that the issue is trivial and should not concern the LGU; just take a look at the comments on this post. Others would also say that Chan was overreacting and could be  stifling whatever artistic expression is called forth in the work.
