For anyone who needs a history refresher, ‘The Kingmaker’ is free to stream

Election season is upon us, and so are attempts at reworking our past. History is the last thing we should give a makeover to, but if some of your Facebook relatives insist, then here’s a recommendation: documentary “The Kingmaker,” now streaming for free.

Directed by Lauren Greenfield, the 2019 film examines the history of the Marcos family, with a particular spotlight on former first lady Imelda Marcos and her active role in the 2016 vice-presidential candidacy of her son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Aside from the Marcoses, the documentary uncovers different sides of the story featuring interviews with Vice President Leni Robredo and victims of human rights violations during Martial Law.

Amid the backdrop of the Marcoses’ long-standing luxurious lifestyle along with history’s corruption and brutality in plain sight, “The Kingmaker” has been a festival favorite, earning awards from the Warsaw International Film Festival and the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.
