A ‘The Social Network’ sequel about Meta? Yeah, it’s possible

Is it time to rejoice, Film Twitter? “The Social Network”—a.k.a. the biopic that brought us classics like Andrew Garfield’s F You Flip-flops—could possibly have a sequel. (Emphasis on the “possibly.”)

The 2010 film’s screenwriter Aaron Sorkin talked about the potential part two with The Hollywood Reporter during a convo on his upcoming project “Being the Ricardos.” The conversation then delved into his previous work with “The Social Network’s” director David Fincher, where the news outlet asked about Sorkin’s previously mentioned wish to work on a sequel.

“It’s amazing because I actually had a phone call about that very subject this morning. Have we really gone nowhere since the time I said that? What progress has been made?” Sorkin says. “The answer to your question is no, I am not done wanting to work with great directors, and Fincher would certainly be on the top of that list.”

He continued, “I think what has been going on with Facebook these last few years is a story very much worth telling, and there is a way to tell it as a follow-up to ‘The Social Network,’ and that’s as much as I know.”

Last year, Sorkin talked to MTV’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast about writing a film about the “dark side of Facebook.”

“Do I want to write that movie? Yeah, I do,” he said. “I will only write it if David directs it. If Billy Wilder came back from the grave and said he wanted to direct it, I’d say I’d only do it with David.”

The 2010 biopic followed pre-billionaire Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg) working on a college-exclusive site just as he’s fresh off some love drama. One thing led to another, and he and his team launched what we now know as Facebook—but not without getting a few lawsuits in the process.

Since then, the internet bigwig has been smack-dab in the middle of several international scandals and a makeover, to boot. So, yeah, rest assured, there’s plenty of material for Sorkin to work with.
