K-drama remakes are a touchy subject for fans (hello, American “Crash Landing On You”), but it seems that more are coming on our shores. The next on that potential list? “Vincenzo” and “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.”
According to reports by Korean news outlet Sports Chosun and Pinkvilla, Studio Dragon—the production company behind both of the hit series—had been asked about remake rights abroad. Currently, related details are being discussed by those involved.
Studio Dragon chalks these offers up to the success of both series in South Korea and international drama-watching audiences. Speaking to Sports Chosun, a rep from the production team said: “The popularity of ‘Vincenzo’ and the healing romance ‘Hometown Cha Cha Cha,’ which have a complex genre character, prove that global audiences have already fallen in love with K-drama regardless of genre.”
“Vincenzo,” which was released earlier this year, revolves around a Korean-Italian mafia lawyer (Song Joong-ki) who flies back to his motherland, later finding himself in a fight against a corrupted conglomerate. Its finale ended at a peak 16.2 percent in South Korea.
Meanwhile, the recently wrapped “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” follows a Seoul dentist (Shin Min-a) who moves to the tiny seaside village Gongjin, where she meets all-around man-slash-chief, Hong Du-sik (Kim Seon-ho). The show’s finale recorded its highest 12.7 percent. (And it also made it to our top TV series this year, JSYK.)
If the international remakes do get the green light, then we’re crossing our fingers for good ones. In the meantime, we’ll be here, channeling “Parasite’s” Bong Joon-ho with good ol’ subtitles.
