Makoto Shinkai’s next sob-inducing film is a ‘road movie’

The cryfest continues, Makoto Shinkai fans. After “Your Name” and “Weathering With You” left us all in an uncontrollable mess, the filmmaker has dropped info on his next film. (Cue: more sobs.)

After giving hints on his current WIP back in 2020, the latest Shinkai project now has a name attached to it—“Suzume no Tojimari” (Suzume Locking Up the Doors). Dubbed as a “road movie” by its official site, the film follows 17-year-old titular character Suzume, who’s pulled out of her quiet life and onto an adventure with a young traveler to the mountains. There, they begin their search for a door that unlocks portals across Japan that are bound to bring chaos into the world.

The Japanese filmmaker is set to write and direct the film, alongside his collaborators in previous projects like “Your Name,” including animation director Kenichi Tsuchiya and art director Takumi Tanji.

“Suzume no Tojimari” is set to release in Japan in fall 2022. While we wait, here are some more Makoto Shinkai films in case it’s a “bawling your eyes out” kinda day.
