Here’s what to expect at the first ALT Philippines 2020

This year, the local art scene will be witnessing a brand new event that hopes to redefine the way we view art fairs. The event called ALT Philippines 2020 will take place at SMX Convention Center Aura in Taguig City from Feb. 14 to 16.

Described as a “pioneer collaborative project,” ALT Philippines is comprised of 10 galleries around Manila that hope to express their own visions. Over 150 local contemporary artists will be showcasing exploratory works prepared specifically for this event.

Blanc Gallery

According to Jay Amante, owner of Blanc Gallery, the works they will be exhibiting are geared towards the idea of a fulfilled space. “The exhibition journey begins with how small, mindful, deliberate movements progress towards a state of contentment,” the exhibition brief reads. “We go back to when we were easily pleased in a given fulfilled space.”

Blanc Gallery will showcase works from over 30 artists, all of whom have worked with the gallery prior to the event.

West Gallery

West Gallery will present works from 18 artists. Some on the lineup include self-taught artist Luis Lorenzana, Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award recipient Mark Andy Garcia, tactile painter Jigger Cruz, visual artist Geraldine Javier, and multimedia artist Raffy T. Napay.

MO_Space

Stephanie Frondoso says that MO_Space’s exhibit will be focusing on the artists themselves. “While its regular programming features works that focus on ideas that can be expressed through a large space and by means of a more complex presentation, for ALT Philippines 2020 the gallery will highlight the strengths of each artist by asking them to show ‘the best of the best,’” she says.

Some of the artists that will be presenting are visual artist Lesley-Anne Cao, curator and researcher Ringo Bunoan as well as painter and photographer Soler Santos.

Vinyl on Vinyl

Vinyl on Vinyl meanwhile will exhibit works from 17 local contemporary artists. Some of the artists that will be presenting with the gallery are visceral artist Doktor Karayom, visual artist Dennis Bato, mixed media artist Pinky Ibarra Urmaza as well as street artist and painter Archie Oclos.

1335Mabini

1335Mabini’s exhibit will be geared towards their artistic positions with regard to exploring mobility, history and critical engagement with the environment, collective memory, and politics. Some of the artists that will contribute to the gallery’s dynamic range of works are Filipino-Canadian painter Jill Paz, photographer and painter Poklong Ananding, and Chinese-Filipino painter Dexter Sy.
