We may not know the release date of “Euphoria’s” third season yet, but fans of the teen drama series still keep on getting supporting evidence of the show’s impact. Case in point: Another win for Zendaya, who plays protagonist Rue Bennett.
After becoming the youngest two-time Emmy winner and the first Black woman to bag an Emmy for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama category twice, the 26-year-old star has added another bullet to her “first” career milestones. Today, Zendaya won the Best Television Actress in a Drama Series award for her performance in “Euphoria,” offering her first ever shiny Golden Globe. She competed against Emmy D’Arcy (“House of Dragon”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”), and Hilary Swank (“Alaska Daily”) for the title.
While it’s too bad we weren’t able to see her accept the trophy (and strut her stuff at the red carpet), presenter Jay Ellis, who accepted the award on her behalf, clued us in on her absence: “She’s busy, she’s working, y’all. It’s a good thing.”
Well, she is. For one, the actress has been busy with “Dune: Part Two,” which has reportedly wrapped filming in December. Other upcoming projects include a Luca Guadagnino-directed tennis romance-drama, and an A24 biopic.
On Instagram, Zendaya posted a message of gratitude after the awards show. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to be there tonight, but I just wanted to say thank you to @goldenglobes for this incredible honor,” she said. “To my fellow nominees, it is a privilege to be named beside you, I admire you all deeply. Thank you to my Euphoria family, without you, none of this is possible. Lastly, thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has allowed Rue into theirs.”
Meanwhile in other Golden Globes-related stuff that made us emotional today: The acceptance speeches of “Everything Everywhere All At Once” stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, who took home Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor (in a musical or comedy film) respectively, as they deserve.
