COVID-19 checkpoints can be tracked through this interactive map

Due to the enhanced community quarantine, checkpoints have been placed throughout Metro Manila in order to curb the spread of the virus. Civilians have to undergo a temperature check and have to present their company I.D. or a Certificate of Employment that states the address of their workplace. Because of this process, vehicle and human traffic have ensued in the city despite the need for social distancing.

In order to help in lessening the congestion, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman professor Noriel Christopher Tiglao has created a map that visualizes where each quarantine checkpoint is located on the map. Tiglao is also a civil engineer by profession and a teacher of geographic information systems for public administration.

The map was shared on Twitter by Mahar Lagmay, director of Project NOAH, the Philippines’ primary disaster risk reduction and management program.

Access the map at https://www.safetravel.ph/. Currently, the checkpoints available on the map are those found in Metro Manila. It is also linked to Google Traffic which allows it to show the traffic status of neighboring roads around the checkpoint. Simply zoom in on the interactive map.

UP Diliman scientists were also the ones to develop the fast-acting and affordable COVID-19 test kits. Students from different colleges of the school are also in the process of developing affordable and easy-to-build sanitation tents that can be used in public spaces.
