Tagle, Villegas chosen as members of Synod Message Commission

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle has been named vice president of the Commission for the Message for the Synod of Bishops being held in Rome. He and commission president Giuseppe Cardinal Betori, Archbishop of Florence, were nominated by Pope Benedict XVI.

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas was elected along with seven others to the commission by the Synod Fathers on Oct. 11. The Pope will nominate two more to complete the 12-member commission.

The commission is tasked with preparing a Message (Nuntius) which, after the approval by the Synod Fathers, will be published to inform the People of God about the themes dealt with during the Synodal Assize.

On Oct. 9, Archbishops Tagle and Villegas presented their interventions to the Synod.

This XII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops takes place from Oct. 7-28 on the theme of the New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith.

The new evangelization must be a call for new charity. We will be credible bringers of Gospel joy if the proclamation is accompanied by its twin messenger of charity. The charity of Jesus is the gift of Himself. The charity of the new evangelization must be the gift of Jesus.
