Make great hair your 2013 beauty resolution

MESSY big bun, Petra Karlsson

Numerous elements affect the final form of your hair—like the cut, the color and the products you use—while all these affect the outcome of the final appearance of your hair, the most expensive hair products can’t overhaul your hairdo if your diet is low in nutrition and nourishment.

Intake of supplements for your hair such as fish oils, flax seed oil, vitamin B, specifically biotin and inositol and a multivitamin will definitely strengthen and beautify your hair. Treatments on your hair such as hot oil treatments, keratin treatments and the like would certainly be beneficial for your hair. Lastly, make sure that your everyday diet is advantageous and revolves around nutritious foods. Beautiful hair and skin begin with a healthy inside.

Check out these styles that you can practice on yourself for 2013.

Straight hair

You can’t go wrong with stick-straight hair. This hairstyle goes with just about any look, and when parted in the middle, can appear retro and hip. Hair that has volume at the roots looks sophisticated and chic, especially when worn with a fashion savvy outfit. Avoid at all costs, straight hair that is flat and sticks to your face. This is completely unflattering and can make your hair look sparse.

For shiny straight hair all day, every day, try the Brazilian Keratin treatment. This acts as protection for your hair, while automatically smoothing the appearance of your hair. The result? Wash-and-wear salon-looking hair without sacrificing the health of your precious mane. We like the Keratin Treatment at Symmetria Salon on N. Domingo Street.

If Keratin treatments are out of the question, after showering, place some volumizer at your roots, and blow-dry your hair with a paddle brush and a huge round wooden bristle brush for volume. Finish your look by using a flat iron on your hair to ensure that your hair is super straight and will last the whole day.

Messy bun

While everyone loves the great fashion style of Petra Karlsson, her distinctive trait is her stylish bun. Though she wears a variety of hairstyles, her unique hairstyle is her bun with a braid that acts as a headband. This is stylish and chic, and would be a great accent to a great outfit. Try this at home, by following the steps below:

1. Wash your hair and put some mousse on your hair.

2. Separate the topmost portion of your hair, and French braid to the style of a hairband.

3. To French braid, gather the allocated hair (starting from the bottom left portion of your hair) and divide hair into three equal sections. Hold the right section on your right hand, the left section on your left hand, and the mid section on either hand. Cross the right section over the middle section, then repeat this with the left section. Continue doing this until you reach the bottom part of your hair (right side of your head).

4. Keep the braid loose and thick.

5. Gather the rest of your hair and make a loose thick bun. If your hair is too short or too thin for a big bun, try putting a butterfly clip inside the bun and covering the clip with hair. You can also opt to use a stocked up sock. These accessories would trick your hair into having a huge messy bun to match the frontal braid.

Should the French headband braid seem too complicated for you, try a normal big bun. Try this by following the steps below:

1. Wash your hair and put some mousse onto your hair.

2. Gather your hair to a mid or high ponytail with a rubber elastic.

3. For a thick bun, try using an old sock, and cutting out the toe portion of the sock.

4. Place the sock doughnut at the ponytail and pull strands through the hole in the center. Cover the sock with your hair by smoothing your hair over the sock, and tucking the ends underneath.

5. Secure the bun by pinning the tucked in hair with bobby pins. For a fuller looking bun, gently tug and pull strands and pouf out the hair from the center portion of the bun.

Bangs

Bangs are completely retro, but not totally dated. Blunt bangs look great with straight hair, and frames a long face. Pros: You don’t need to overly fix your bangs. They’re pretty much wash-and-wear, yet give you a fixed-up appearance.

Con: The upkeep of bangs can be tedious. Bangs grow out fast, so expect to visit your salon for a quick trim for your bangs to maintain its length, and look. Emphasis Salon offers bangs trim for P250.

Wavy hair

Hair with volume and waves looks sexy on anyone. This style is timeless, and instantly raises your sex appeal and glam factor when worn properly. There are many ways to do wavy hair. We have options, so try the steps below and see what works best for your hair.

1. Wash your hair and mist your hair with some volumizing thermal spray. Let it dry

2. Divide your hair into portions with a hair clip

3. Take a curling iron (we like the 2-inch barrel) and hold this vertically upside down, wrapping your portioned out hair around the barrel, starting at the top and ending at the end.

4. Hold it for a few seconds, between 10- 15 seconds, and let your hair loose and fall off on its own from the barrel.

5. Try not to touch your curls right after curling, allowing your hair to set and secure its shape.

6. Repeat the steps above on all the parts of your head. When you’re done, set your hair with volumizing hairspray, and tousle your hair with your fingers to break the curls. Use your fingers to add extra volume at the roots.
