This tomato jam helps Ifugao farmers and prevents produce from going to waste

With an oversupply of tomatoes due to travel and transportation restrictions, local businesses have been helping Ifugao farmers sell their produce by helping them safely transport their tomatoes to buyers in Metro Manila.

Aside from helping farmers transport their produce, produce from the farmers have also been utilized in different ways to help minimize wastage. Ifugao State University, for example, held training sessions on jam processing for women and community members.

Last June 12, 13 and 15, the university’s Department of Extension and Training (DET) and College of Agriculture and Home Sciences (CAHS) taught participants how to make tomato jam. During the three-day training session, the participants were able to produce 136 bottles of jam, which were sold for P100. Proceeds from this sale were sold to help Ifugao farmers recover from their losses.

To augment the proceeds generated by the workshop, a group of volunteers produced an additional 400 bottles of tomato jam. Earnings from this sale will be used to buy tomatoes from Ifugao farmers. Interested buyers may contact 0905-5985829 or 0926-3198137 for more information.
