Sampling more than a restaurant’s bestsellers

Katipunan has become a hub for many dining places. With the main target market being mostly students, it has become an area where many amateur restaurateurs are confident enough to try out what to them are winner dishes from their homes. Out of these risks taken, many have blossomed into chains. Flaming Wings is one.

Miel is an Ateneo student who knows all the dining places across the school. “Tito, the wings are to die for.” Not only are the wings good, they also have a few items on the menu worth a visit like the chicken wrapped in lettuce and a few sandwiches.

Expansion means success. This is one indicator I watch out for. If I have never tried a place before and see that another branch has been put up, it follows they have something worth visiting. Most times, what they are known for is the bestseller but on a few occasions, I have found something on the menu also worth my frequent visits.

One such place is Red Roasters. On my almost daily drive along Katipunan in the Blue Ridge area, I would see this brightly lit and attractive dining place. I remember seeing a branch behind our restaurant Wooden Spoon in Katipunan. This one was a second branch.

One afternoon, after a heavy bout at the restaurant, I wanted to relax and discover something new. I drove off to this place and ordered all their bestsellers. I had the quarter roast chicken, Caesar salad, margherita pasta, the tuna grilled ciabatta sandwich and dessert. I have since gone back a few more times. I love a good sandwich. I crave their grilled ciabatta sandwich with tuna and the herbed chicken sandwich.

One time they ran out of the tuna so I was forced to order the Crunchy Fish Filet Sandwich. If the yumminess of the fish fillet sandwich was any indication, then their Crunchy Chicken Sandwich is also a winner. The tuna filling is different in that it seems like it has creamy mashed potato mixed in. Brilliant idea. Last time I was there, we ordered the pesto with chicken fingers. Sarap!

It was a garlicky, cheesy green pasta with a side serving of chicken fingers with a honey dipping sauce. I have to try their Chicken Barbecue and the other pastas. The roast chicken is okay but I feel needs to be worked on a bit more. The dessert is to die for. I love their molten chocolate cake. Also served à la mode, it is warm and the blend of warm and cold is a perfect ending to a new discovery. They also have smoothies and my daughter Danielle loves their peach iced tea. This is one place I have been frequenting lately.

Expansion is the sign of good food. Another is the immediate desire to share the experience with your loved ones. I did. Check them out!

Happy eating!
