Good news: Meralco is giving a discount to their ‘lifeline customers’

Here’s a dose of good news to start your week right: Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) told the House of Representatives Committee on Good Governance and Public Accountability on Aug. 24 that they will grant a distribution charge discount to its “lifeline customers.”

According to Meralco president and CEO Ray Espinosa, the discount amounts to a total of P101 million and will be able to cover 2.77 million qualified consumers.

To be counted as a “lifeline customer,” one must have an electric consumption of 100 kilowatts per hour and below. The distribution charge discount will then be based on lifeline customers as of February 2020. If qualified, the discount will be shown as an additional credit to your succeeding billings.

“Ginagamit natin ang February 2020 kasi yun ang huling actual meter reading bago nagkaroon ng enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) at modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ), at dito malalaman natin sino ang mga lifeline customers na yun na inabutan ng ECQ at MECQ,” said Espinosa.

In order to give customers more time to collect funds for their bills, Meralco also announced that they are extending the period of no power disconnection until the end of October. This is a month longer than the company’s initial deadline, which was Sept. 30.
