Despite limitations set by the pandemic, single-origin chocolate producer Malagos Chocolate continues to bring home accolades for their products.
At the World Drinking Chocolate Competition in Hannover, Germany, the Davao-based brand brought home four gold medals and a bronze. Results were announced during the virtual Schokoladen Gourmet Festival last Oct. 25.
Malagos Chocolate bagged golds for categories Plain/Origin Dark Drinking Chocolate (made with water), Growing Country, Chocolate Maker and Direct Traded. They also won bronze for the Plain/Origin Dark Drinking Chocolate (made with milk) category.
“With these new awards, Malagos Chocolate has gone full circle,” their Instagram post reads. “Back in 2015, it was in this same category that we were able to claim our first international award, which placed the spotlight on Malagos and Philippine cacao.”
In the past year alone, Puentespina Farms, the cacao source of Malagos Chocolate, became an heirloom designated farm. They are one of only 16 farms in the world to receive this recognition internationally, joining cacao farms in Bolivia, Ecuador and Costa Rica. They are also the first farm in the country to earn this award.
