Meet Legaci, Justin Bieber’s Pinoy backup singers | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

THEIR story is a lot like  Justin’s.

With a passion for music that they wanted to share with the world, the members of Legaci turned to YouTube. The San Francisco-based all-Pinoy vocal group started uploading videos of their performances on the site, and the hits kept coming. And when they covered Justin Bieber’s mega hit “Baby,” Justin and his manager Scooter Braun found them.

Since then, Micah Tolentino, Jaymill Atencion, Del Lazaro, Dominic Manuel and Chris Abad have been touring the world with Justin as backup singers for his My World Tour.

“They’re all really cool,” Justin said. “You guys will see them tonight. They will be onstage rocking it. They’re gonna do a solo for you guys here in the Philippines. I’m really excited about it. They’re really excited.”

Justin’s concert last Tuesday was extra special for Legaci because they were eager to perform for their kababayans. They received a warm welcome from the huge crowd; their a capella segment, which featured hit songs from Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Usher, was met with wild screams.

Justin was right; although they stayed for less than 24 hours, Legaci had come home.

In this exclusive interview with Super, they talk about their beginnings, Pinoy pride, and what it’s like to be working with Justin.

What’s it like being on tour with Justin Bieber?

He’s been such a joy to work with. He’s a great kid, very down-to-earth, really takes good care of the group and everyone around him. So it’s been an absolute pleasure working with him. He’s multi-talented. He actually really loves the Philippines and the Filipino culture. He’s excited about going to the Philippines.
Which has been your favorite tour stop, and why?

Manila, of course. We’ve always talked about going to our homeland and performing for our kababayan. We’re so excited to be here!

How did Legaci start?

Legaci was formed in 1997 in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, where the original members Micah and Jaymill had a dream to show the world how talented all of us Filipinos are! We got discovered through YouTube by Justin’s manager. That’s how Justin Bieber and his management found us. We covered Justin’s single “Baby,” and a few days later his manager e-mailed us and told us that he saw our video and that he liked us and wanted to work with us. So thanks to YouTube for that.

Do you have a message for your Pinoy fans?

We are so happy to be in the Philippines. But we are very sad that we’re leaving so soon. But don’t worry, kababayan, we’ll be back! We just want to continue inspiring the younger generation. Dreams do come true. If you strive, work hard, anything is possible.
