5 things about Avicii

A few years ago, the name Tim Bergling/Avicii would not even ring a bell, but fast-forward to 2013 and Avicii has transformed into a household name, renowned worldwide for his superior skills, talent, and the prestige he has brought to electronic music.

A Swedish DJ, record producer, and remixer, Avicii has garnered utmost recognition in his field, currently ranking 5th worldwide in DJ Rankings, with a Grammy Award nomination under his belt, and chart-toppers such as “LE7ELS,” “Fade Into Darkness,” “Seek Bromance,” “Silhouettes” and “I Could Be The One.” He has also spearheaded global electronic music festivals such as Tomorrowland in Belgium, Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Creamfields, and Stereosonic.

Here are five Super things about Avicii:

The name

Before being known as DJ Avicii, the international superstar DJ was known as Tim Bergling. When the then-starting DJ wanted to set up a MySpace page to expand his fan base, each and every username was taken, including his own. This led him to derive his stage name from Buddhism upon the suggestion of his friend, with the word “Avicii” meaning the lowest level of Buddhist hell.

The face

Avicii has various collaborations with international music icons like Madonna, David Guetta, and Tiësto, and has penetrated not just the music industry, but the fashion industry as well. Avicii was tapped by Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply for their Fall 2012 collection— he co-produced the collection’s video.

The beginning

Avicii started out by making mixes in his own bedroom at the age of 8. He produced a number of mixes, among them a remix of “Lazy Jones,” the theme song for the Commodore 64 game, which inspired him to create a new one: “Lazy Lace.” His great potential did not go unnoticed, and soon he was sought after by labels, agencies, and producers who found his mixes online.

The inspiration

Avicii is constantly inspired by various genres of music, growing up in an environment which exposed him to all kinds of sounds, from 60s rock to Daft Punk to Laidback Luke, Axwell, and Sebastian Ingrosso. He credits these artists as his “teachers,” his tracks an amalgamation of all their influences.

A day in the life

His usual day involves touring, going around the world to catch his next show, and exploring the city. In his spare time, he writes music, watches movies, and tries to live a “normal” life.
