Jason Mraz won’t give up on Manila

Jason Mraz, the American singer-songwriter famous for such hits as “I’m Yours,” “The Remedy,” “Lucky,” “I Won’t Give Up,” “Make It Mine” and “Himself,” is returning to Manila with his band to perform on May 14 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

MMI and Ovation Productions are bringing back the multi-Grammy Award-winning artist after his smash debut concert on Oct. 30 also at the Big Dome, during which he performed an acoustic set with percussionist Toca Rivera.

Mraz’s May 18 show will also feature Filipino YouTube singing sensation Zendee as special guest.

Acclaimed as one of today’s most gifted artists, Mraz’s musical journey has taken him from coffeehouses to concert stadia around the globe.

He first gained public attention in 1999 when he settled in San Diego, California, where he became a regular performer at the coffeehouse Java Joe’s.

The next two years saw his following extend to Los Angeles, attracting record label executives that eventually led to his signing to Elektra Records in 2002. The rest is pop music history.

Mraz’s recording career got off to an auspicious start with the release in November 2002 of his debut album, “Waiting For My Rocket To Come,” which contained the hit single, “The Remedy (I Don’t Worry),” and blended his early influences and coming-of-age by combining country and roots rock with the poeticism of coffee house folk, elements of jazz and the rhythmic charge of hip hop.

It was his sophomore album, “Mr. A-Z” (2005), however, that gained him commercial success when it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200 and sold over 100,000 copies in the US in 2008.

His third studio album, “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things” (2008), debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 200 and became a huge commercial success worldwide, earning multiplatinum certifications worldwide.

From that album came “I’m Yours,” which gave him his first Top 10 single after soaring to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song and its singer were nominated for Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance honors, respectively, at the 51st Grammy Awards in 2009.

On the same year, “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things” also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

But it was at the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010 when Mraz emerged triumphant by winning Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Make It Mine” and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Lucky.”

His latest album, “Love Is A Four-Letter Word” (2012), debuted at the Top 15 in 13 countries, including No. 2 in the US, with the first single, “I Won’t Give Up,” debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Digital Songs chart one week after its release.
