Five deaths in the family–and still a whole lot of living to do

Coming back from the canonization of Beato Pedro Calungsod on St. Peter’s Square in Rome, I recall my first canonization on Oct. 6, 2002, when Blessed Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei, was raised to sainthood. Jessica Soho featured him and his deep love for the Eraserheads on her show. “Fan Zappa,” his essay about the crazy things he did for the love of their music, won him a Fender guitar and amp. (“I told my story in a ‘Punk Zappa’ way,” he said.)
“I never thought they would come here,” said Niki Jalandoni, a 15-year-old who says she’s been watching the show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” since season one.
I was 15 years old when I moved from the Philippines to the US. I was already an Eraserheads fan back then. I grew up watching them on TV, hearing them on the radio and listening to their cassette tapes.
