It’s the first month of school—a fact that has just sunk in among students in the Philippines. Those enrolled at De La Salle University (DLSU), whose trimester started in May, have had more time to spend with their new schoolmates.
It’s UAAP season again, when one of the biggest rivalries in Philippine sports unfolds.
The National Book Development Board (NBDB) and De La Salle University-Manila’s College of Liberal Arts and Department of Literature will hold the international literary festival, “Text in the City: Narrating Southeast Asia,” on Nov. 12, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
We’ve seen them in the hard court, in the heat of the game, looking fierce. Now we show them with their game faces off, beaming with pride, enjoying an all-time high after winning the most watched basketball finals in the history of the UAAP.
A few hours after the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers’ final practice a day before Game 3 of the epic finals against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers in this year’s UAAP men’s basketball season, coach Juno Sauler recalled the last few lines in “Invictus” (Latin for “unconquered”), a poem by William Ernest Henley.
Game three of the UAAP men’s basketball finals was decided in a way fans of both schools would never forget—only 2 points spelled victory.
As do-or-die matches go, the DLSU-UST championship game on Saturday is not for the faint of heart. After UST won the first game by only one point, and DLSU evened up the score with a second-game victory, the deciding third game will surely have a nail-biting finish.
“Pagtitipon/Gathering: First Conference on Performance Studies in the Philippines” will be held on Aug. 24, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m., at De La Salle University-Manila. This one-day conference seeks to gather scholars, researchers, artists and practitioners to explore the possibility of birthing a new “field” of studying and doing performance in the country.
What everyone knew before the game was that De La Salle University (DLSU) has not won against Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) for quite some time. In the UAAP, it’s been two years since the Archers shot the Eagles down to the ground. This year was different in several ways.
TRADITION? You have no idea. The DLSU Animo Squad, the pep squad of De La Salle University, held its annual initiation for new members last June 17 to 21, which it refers to as “Hell Week.” But this is all to test the dedication and will of the newbies, to see if they are worthy of carrying the name of the school on the battlefield, where they have to be the heart of the crowd supporting the school.
