Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete.” “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice.” (Philippians 4: 4) With these words from the entrance antiphon for today’s Mass, the Third Sunday of Advent or Gaudete Sunday, we celebrate what is a “break” in the penitential preparation for Christmas.
Today is the traditional Gaudete Sunday; gaudete means rejoice! We also celebrate this on the third Sunday of Lent.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4) Today is Gaudete Sunday, one of two Sundays in the liturgical year when the priest wears rose-colored vestments. (The other Sunday is the third Sunday of Lent.)
