My fascination with theater began at a very young age. I clearly remember watching “The King and I” at the Meralco Theater and being enthralled by the singing children and of course, the King of Siam and Anna.
When Disney’s “Aladdin” first opened in Philippine cinemas in the summer of 1993, I dragged my brother to watch—but not before slipping my big Aladdin pin, a treasured pasalubong from an aunt who had gone to Disneyland, inside the right pocket of my jeans.
VIVA ATLANTIS Theatricals’ production of “Disney’s Tarzan” opened yesterday and runs until July 7 at Meralco Theater.
Towards the climax of Act II of “Disney’s Tarzan,” the short-lived Broadway musical running until Saturday at the Meralco Theater as Viva Atlantis Theatricals’ second offering of the year, its titular ape-man, torn between remaining with his adoptive gorilla family and following his newfound human friends back to England, frustratingly exclaims, “I’m so confused!”
It is easy to dismiss Trumpets’ “The Bluebird of Happiness”—which the Christian theater company dubs its “big musical comeback”—as just another extravagantly fantastical, unrestrainedly colorful kiddie show. Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle is inviting music lovers to a concert at 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Meralco Theater. The concert aims to raise funds for “decent social housing for employees of the archdiocese.”
“Shrek The Musical,” which is running at Meralco Theater until Oct. 12, is a solid production. The production values are phenomenal. The props and costumes are well-made, the acting is competent, and the lights, sound and other fiddly bits that many productions this big get wrong or unevenly are done right.
