Highlighting the opening of the 89th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Bedans gather to express all-out support for the student athletes during the annual pep rally held inside the MVP Gym at San Beda College on Friday.
Though Ateneo Blue Eagle Kiefer Ravena and San Beda Red Lion Baser Amer don’t duke it out on the same basketball league, the two are considered rivals. Both reign supreme in their respective courts—Ravena’s UAAP, Amer’s NCAA—and parallels have inevitably been made regarding their athletic prowess.
The 89th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) kicked off with a bang as host school De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) opened the festivities last June 22 at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City with a well-synchronized, choreographed performance, with the theme “Our Stars Will Shine in 89.” The festivities leading to the event did not disappoint, as Benilde also hosted a kick-off party on June 15 at their campus.
During the glory days of the NCAA, Ateneo and San Beda were the giants in the league; as the two winningest schools, they were considered poles apart.
On June 8 at the FilOil Flying V Arena, the best of collegiate basketball took the floor at the first ever Master Game Face All-Star Basketball Challenge.
The Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center (BNSCWC) of De La Salle University (DLSU) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) award ten fellowships for Kritika 2013: National Workshop on Art and Cultural Criticism, which will be held at the University of St. La Salle (USLS) in Bacolod on April 21-27.
The NCAA has always been known as the “other collegiate league,” always living in the shadow of the more popular UAAP. Little do people know that the older generations still claim that the NCAA was the top collegiate league of their time.
Let’s admit it: The Philippines is a basketball-crazy country. No matter how football fans claim that football should be our sport due to our height disadvantage, still, most streets have a makeshift basketball court.

High: The LSGH crowd chanting “Go La Salle!” It was cheering that hadn’t been heard in the league for a long time. It echoed around the big dome.Low: The host school failed to schedule the games on weekends, much to the annoyance of working patrons. High: Thank God for semestral break! Low: Due to the league’s erratic schedule, as of press time, we still do not know who wins the NCAA Juniors crown. High: A San Beda vs La Salle Greenhills surprise finals has become the most interesting Juniors match this year.
In the manner of a real lion, popularly referred to as the “king of the jungle,” Garvo Lanete wants to earn his keep. Restless and focused, he would not settle for a silent exit.
