Philippine fashion has come a long way since the time of the classic terno and baro’t saya. Daring to twist the traditional Filipino woman’s garb via back-to-back shows, Inquirer Lifestyle asked renowned and upcoming Filipino designers to transform the modest maria clara into their modern and unique interpretations.
For this year’s annual exhibit of student works, Slim’s students explored what could make them truly Filipino designers—and tapped into everything from history, culture and literature to ordinary things like local food and flowers.
In 1957, composer Felipe Padilla de Leon wrote the first full-length Philippine opera, a dramatization of Rizal’s “Noli Me Tangere.” With libretto by eminent sculptor Guillermo Tolentino (both would later be named National Artists), the production was mounted at the historic auditorium of Far Eastern University.
Of all local and foreign operas staged in the country this year, nothing beats perhaps the promotion and marketing of the new production of Felipe Padilla de Leon’s opera “Noli Me Tangere.”
A mostly Filipino-American crowd gave a standing ovation and rave reviews to “Noli Me Tangere, the Musical” at its opening performance August 23 at the Aratani Theater.
