From sunup to sundown, there is always something new to expect and something exciting to do on the huge waves and seemingly boundless shore of Bagasbas Beach here in Daet, whether it’s summer or not.
It is 7 a.m. on a weekend, and the crashing of sea waves echoes like a siren’s call. Heads bob in and out of the water, with voices shrieking and bodies lying on top of surfboards, arms paddling, eyes darting, waiting for the next big wave.
Surfing. Music. Arts. These were the highlights for this year’s eighth annual La Union Surf Break: Soul Surf, held in La Union.
For one weekend, they became surfers by day and DJs by night. At the recent Billabong All Girls Surf Camp, 24 young women experienced the surf-and-music lifestyle on the sunny shores of San Juan, La Union. Held March 15-17 at San Juan Surf Resort, the girls worked on perfecting their surfing skills—under the watchful eye of pro surfer Luke Landrigan, and Elaine Abonal of Surfista Travels, a surf tour company.
PRIVATE stakeholders in the surfing industry, supported by the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, are stepping up efforts to make the sport a major tourist attraction in the Philippines.
