With a plethora of dystopian teen films saturating theaters in recent years—worldwide blockbuster “The Hunger Games,” “Divergent” and star-studded “The Giver,” to name a few—moviegoers are wont to dismiss “The Maze Runner” as just another young-adult book adaptation trying to capitalize on its predecessors’ success and fame.
Die-hard fans of “The Hunger Games” movie franchise will want to head to Astroplus and Astrovision to get their hands on the special limited edition two-disc DVD/Blu-ray set of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”
Of all the controlling regimes ruling over the many dystopias in young adult (YA) fiction, the most all-encompassing is not The Capitol from Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games,” but instead the ominously-named Society from Ally Condie’s “Matched” trilogy.
Beyond the sheer irony of making the idea of dystopia popular, the world-conquering success of Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games” works because of the range of control methods showcased by the young-adult novels unloaded in its wake.
