As the famed icon of the Western canon, William Shakespeare has been interpreted across Asian cultures and traditions in remarkable ways, his work appearing not only in theater and film but also in pop cultural artifacts like manga and animé.
Lending their expertise to the conference are leading Shakespearean scholars from Taiwan, Japan, India, Korea, the United States, and the Philippines, and Filipino directors and playwrights who have produced and written adaptations of Shakespearean texts.
Open to anyone with a curiosity for Asian Shakespeare but especially teachers, students, academics, researchers, and theater practitioners, the conference will be held on Dec. 5-6 at the Pulungang Claro M. Recto of Bulwagang Rizal in UP Diliman, Quezon City.
The registration fee for the two-day conference is at P3,000 which covers morning snacks, lunch, afternoon snacks, conference materials, and a ticket to the conference performance.
An early bird rate of P2,700 applies to participants registering on or before Nov. 22.
The convenors are professors Lily Rose Tope and Judy Ick of the UP Department of English and Comparative Literature. Details about the conference program, speakers, and registration process are available at the official website conference.up.edu.ph/shakespeareinasia2013/.
