The 2018 Winter Olympics are almost here, and while the world’s best athletes psych themselves up for the South Korea event in February, some of the biggest fashion designers in the industry are putting the finishing touches to their outfits. Here’s what we know so far.
Armani
Fashion heavyweight Giorgio Armani has been lined up to design the official uniform for the 2018 Italian Olympic and Paralympic teams. The designer has put together a “modular wardrobe” from the EA7 Emporio Armani sportswear division, that will include a tracksuit, long down coat, jumper and polo fleece, amongst other pieces. The garments will be midnight blue and feature the green, white and red tricolor of the nation’s flag.
Vera Wang
She is known for her graceful, fluid, fashion collections, so Vera Wang is perfectly placed to design the costumes for American men’s figure skating champion Nathan Chen’s performances at next year’s games. “Nathan embodies all the values we have come to respect: hard work, dedication, passion and accomplishment!” the designer said in a statement. “We wish him all the very best.”
Burton Snowboards
The United States Snowboard Team will be in good hands this winter, thanks to the fourth consecutive partnership between Burton Snowboards and U.S. Ski & Snowboard to create one-of-a-kind uniforms. Inspired by the history of the American space program, the uniform is retro-futuristic, comprising garments coated in very fine, real aluminum, and crafted from technical, lightweight and waterproof fabric that reflects and deflects light as well as sound. The inside of the jacket even features Korean translations of lighthearted phrases such as “Do you speak English?” and “Wish me luck!”
The Winter Olympics will run February 9 to 25, 2018 in Pyeongchang County, South Korea. JB
