Festival season is upon us, and that means that you can expect to see plenty of glitter, cycling shorts and “janties” in your social media feeds for the next few months.
At least, that is according to the global fashion search platform Lyst, which has compiled a trend report on the fashion pieces it predicts will dominate the festival scene this summer.
Combining data concerning the online shopping behavior of over five million shoppers per month for the past three months with research on emerging micro-trends and larger consumer trends from the past three years, the company has identified five key trends it expects to pop up in festival fields this season.
First up are neon hues, tie-dye patterns and cycling shorts. The site has seen a 98% increase in searches for lime green (a shade championed by supermodel Kendall Jenner) and neon yellow shades over the past three months, as well as a notable rise in the number of searches for cycling shorts.
Magpie-like textures such as sequins, shell fabrics and metallic colors were identified as the second major festival trend, with sequin bikinis proving particularly popular — increasing by 76% over the past month.
In third place is the “ugly” shoe, which continues to go strong after several seasons. According to Lyst, chunky sandals and sneakers will be everywhere at festivals this season — searches for “rubber sandals” specifically have increased 34% since the start of March.
And in fourth place, we can apparently expect futuristic sunglasses and retro-style bucket hats. Following Kim Kardashian’s sporty Carolina Lemke sunglasses collaboration this month, searches for racer-style shades increased by 650% in just one week.
Perhaps one of the more controversial festival fashion predictions comes in the form of the “janty,” which Lyst has placed at number five in the series. The term, which refers to denim underwear-style shorts, has triggered a 2,250% increase in page views since mid-March, after fashion brand Y/Project debuted a pair on the runway, the company reports.
