I can’t forget how Jaclyn Hill, controversial beauty vlogger, declared that we got the makeup techniques of “baking” from drag queens. “Glamour takes everything from the drag world. You wanna know how to do good makeup, go interview a queen because seriously, that’s where all of this stuff comes from.”
Now that ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ (RPDR) has positioned drag culture in the limelight, a few queens have ventured forth as makeup moguls. It’s only but a logical step, right?
It’s only fueled by more support from the beauty community. Anastasia Beverly Hills collaborated with Alyssa Edwards on an eyeshadow palette last May. Aquaria, season 10 RPDR winner, launched a collection with NYX Cosmetics. ‘Vogue’ and other international publications often feature video how-tos with these drag superstars.
Here’s a quick look at four different makeup lines from ‘Drag Race’ alums:
Trixie Cosmetics
Arguably one of the most successful drag queens with a documentary film, a country music career, and a well-loved web series is Trixie Mattel. It was no surprise that this All Stars Season 3 winner ventured forth with an independent beauty brand. Trixie Cosmetics follows the CEO’s aesthetic: doll house-inspired packaging and a lot of shades of pink. After launching Stacy, a bright pink lipstick, Trixie Cosmetics offers glitter pots to fuel her dream world fantasy.
Kim Chi Chic Beauty
Korean-American Kim Chi partnered with Toni Ko, founder of Nyx Cosmetics, for this beauty brand. Kim Chi Chi Beauty offers eyeshadows, lip glosses, and mirrors. Ko tells ‘Paper‘ of the quality they provide at affordable prices, “If you feel the weight of the palette, it’s very substantial, and it’s only $29. We aren’t the $50 palette. We’re not your $25 lip-gloss company.”
Miss Fame Beauty
Last year, Miss Fame launched her makeup company all about the supermodel glamour she brings to the stage. Products include “The Fetish of Fashion,” a set of five lipsticks and a glitter pot. The lipstick shades range from a nude “Flash of Flesh” to a red “The Other Woman” and an irreverent blue “Dirty Couture.”
Coverboy
Coverboy is a fitting name for Willam Belli’s makeup label. Her tongue-in-cheek humor earned her a following that’s backed up a book deal and a perfume collab. Willam offers designer lashes, Lip Varnish, and Glitter Gelly. She tells Fashionista what made her pursue the business: “Why don’t I throw my two cents into the ring?’ Because my makeup is pretty durable. It’s bulletproof: my lips don’t go anywhere, I’m eating in, I’m smoking in it, I’m leading an active single mother lifestyle.”
