Lull yourself to better slumber with IKEA’s ‘Wake up. It’s time to sleep’ campaign

It is easy to assume that sleep is simply second nature to everyone.

What most of us do not realize is that for many, a good snooze is so elusive that counting sheep is not enough to do the trick.

Filipinos, for one, were found to be among the most sleep-deprived people in the world. Here in the Philippines, nearly half of adults do not get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of shut-eye per night. Sleep is fundamental in one’s overall well-being and not getting enough may lead to long-term health problems.

Swedish home furnishing brand IKEA understands the importance of having quality and restful slumber. Its newest campaign “Wake up! It’s time to sleep” is designed to promote better sleep among Filipinos and features several customers catching some Zs at the retail giant’s bedroom showrooms in Pasay City. The most popular – and dare we say, most adorable – is Shannen Latagan’s three-year-old daughter, who can be seen sleeping soundly on an IKEA bed in a now-viral video on Tiktok.

“Wake up! It’s time to sleep” brings forth sleep solutions that address the various factors that contribute to better sleep – comfort, light, temperature, sound, air quality, and organization.

Comfort is key in attaining a restful sleep and the right mattress and pillow are your bedfellows. IKEA’s ÅFJÄLL foam mattress (starts at P3,990) is ideal for those who like their beds soft while the VALEVÅG pocket spring mattress (starts at P7,990) is for those who prefer it firm.

Ergonomic pillows are said to give the body more relief while sleeping. The MJÖLKKLOCKA ergonomic pillow (P1,990) has memory foam for full comfort whether you’re a side or a back sleeper.

Sleeping with the lights on hinders sleep quality and affects the body’s circadian rhythm. Get a dimmable bedside lamp such as the TÄRNABY (P990) if you’re not comfortable sleeping in total darkness.

You may also choose to replace your room’s light with the TRÅDFRI from IKEA’s line of smart LED light bulbs. It comes with a remote control kit which gives you the power to switch on, dim, and switch off the light without having to get up from your cozy bed.

Nothing is more annoying than being jolted awake because you’re sweating buckets from the oppressive heat. IKEA, known for its Scandinavian design principles of simplicity, functionality, and affordability, offers a wide range of cooling pads and pillows. Its best-selling KLUBBSPORRE (P1,590) is an ergonomic pillow that features a gel layer, providing a cool, soothing sleep surface.

The REXBEGONIA (P490) is a mattress and pillow protector that doubles as a cooling pad. You can even place it in the fridge (using the reusable bag it comes with) before bedtime for that extra cooling effect while you doze off.

The IKEA Life at Home Report 2023 found that 31 percent of Filipinos listen to music, podcasts, or wellness apps to lull them to sleep. The SYMFONISK (P7,990) is a bookshelf speaker made in collaboration with Sonos. The Wi-Fi-enabled speaker allows you to stream music and podcasts from your devices.

Unclean air or unbalanced humidity levels in your home can be detrimental to your sleep and health. The VINDRIKTNING (P590) is an air quality sensor that tells you whether the air you’re breathing is good or not. Use this with the FÖRNUFTIG (P4,290), an air purifier designed to improve your room’s air quality so you can breathe cleaner air while you sleep.

It has been often said that a messy desk encourages creativity and productivity. Sleeping in a cluttered bedroom, however, may cause restlessness and discomfort. Make your room a better place to catch some Zs by stowing your clutter inside IKEA’S MALM chests of drawers (starts at P2,990).  The SKUBB clothes boxes and organizers (starts at P350) are also handy in keeping your clothes, accessories, and knickknacks in one place.
