Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis return for another fun, “freakier” family affair—this time with a four-way body swap
“Freaky Friday’s” body-swapping chaos that charmed audiences in 2003 is making a comeback—now with a multigenerational twist in “Freakier Friday.”
Disney has just released the first trailer of the sequel for “Freakier Friday,” reuniting Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in their beloved mother-daughter roles. Set to hit theaters on Aug. 8, 2025, this sequel arrives in time with the wave of 2000s nostalgia popular today.
While Hollywood’s current reboot culture often draws sighs and groans, the return of Lohan and Curtis’ particular mother-daughter duo has us genuinely excited—perhaps because everyone secretly loves “Freaky Friday” and the thought of being made to walk in our mother’s or daughter’s shoes.
While it’s been 21 years since the original film, the duo looks remarkably unchanged (the face cards are strong here).
The “Freakier Friday” trailer opens with a fortune teller cryptically telling Anna (Lindsay Lohan) and Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis), “That’s interesting… Your lifelines, it’s like they’ve intersected before. You’ve walked in each other’s path.” As mother and daughter exchange awkward, knowing glances, the fortune teller continues, “You’ve learned a lesson—a lesson that may serve you again,” much to their dismay.
The trailer then cuts to what appears to be a supernatural series of events. The earth shakes, electricity fluctuates, and we see four characters waking up to scream at their reflections in the mirror.

The four-way body swap
Unlike the original film, which featured just one mother-daughter swap between Curtis and Lohan, “Freakier Friday” takes the concept further with what appears to be a four-way body swap.
In one scene, a young girl says, “Harp, it’s mom,” while another young girl with a British accent declares, “I’m grandma, sweetheart.” This is followed by plenty of screaming and fainting, with someone in Tess’ body exclaiming the amusing line, “My face looks like a Birkin bag that’s been left out in the sun to rot!”
Set to the tune of Chappell Roan’s “Hot To Go!,” the trailer shows a montage of the characters pretending to be one another while engaging in activities like tennis, surfing, and driving top-down in a red-hot convertible. We also glimpse the hunky Chad Michael Murray, who appeared in the original film, making a grand entrance on a motorcycle.

The new generation
According to Disney’s official logline, “Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”
While the trailer doesn’t explicitly explain the plot, casting information suggests a multigenerational approach as two modern families merge.
The story reportedly centers around Anna’s 14-year-old daughter Harper (Julia Butters)—described as a sharp-witted teen surfer—along with her sharp-tongued, soon-to-be stepsister Lily (Sophia Hammons), the daughter of Anna’s fiancé, British restaurateur Eric Davies. In the film, the two teenagers “do not see eye to eye,” according to casting calls.
The plan seems to involve Harper swapping bodies with her mother Anna, much like in the first film, while Lily swaps with her soon-to-be step-grandmother Tess, creating a more complex dynamic. There’s also mention of Anna planning to move to London, which concerns Tess.

Nisha Ganatra directs the sequel, bringing experience from projects like “The Cheetah Girls: One World” (2008) and “Late Night” (2019) starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling.
At Disney’s D23 event, Lohan expressed her excitement about the “Freakier Friday” project. “It’s more fun, it’s more emotional, and it’s all for you guys… Seriously, the only reason we are back here doing this is because of your love. That is why.”
While some details from the audition notes may not reflect the final script, one thing is for certain—fans of the original won’t have to wait much longer to see this well-loved franchise return with a fresh, multi-faceted twist.
