We remember September for a thousand reasons, foremost being that it’s the birth month of Eugenia “Tita Eggie” Apostol, the stout-hearted founding chairperson of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

For her nth birthday—she claims to be 95, but we totally disagree!—an intimate gathering of friends and former staffers at Mr. & Ms Magazine feted Tita Eggie at a party at Tita Trillo’s  charming wine cellar-cum-resto Titania along Yakal Street in Makati City.

Tita Eggie, as usual, took to the dance floor with Carl Mclean, chairperson of Superbrand Marketing International Inc. and director of Zuellig Pharma for Asia-Pacific. “I want to dance with that foreigner!” she declared once in a party also at Titania.  Inquirer editor-in-chief Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc and Titania owner-wine connoisseur Tita Trillo took that edict to heart and made sure Carl was around for Tita Eggie’s birthday.

As usual, Tita Eggie was flushed with joy at the sight of familiar faces from Mr. & Ms Magazine and the Philippine Daily Inquirer, which she both founded. She said she gets to read her newspaper everyday.  Often, she contemplates the staff box on the Editorial Page which has her name as the Founding Chairman. And in her usual jolly manner, she exclaims, “So I wonder, what have I done to have my name there?”

A lot, Tita Eggie, a lot. Happy birthday, Grand Dame!
