The spirits of UP Diliman | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

The Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines is believed to be one of the most haunted campuses in Metro Manila. Here are some scary stories which prove that there just might be some truth to this hunch.

College of Education

As the oldest building on the campus, the College of Education is not only home to future teachers, but also inhabited by spirits.

One rainy afternoon, a female professor got stranded in front of the college building because of the heavy downpour. Out of desperation, she begged the guard to let her stay inside the building until the rain stopped. The guard brought her to a room and instructed her not to open the door until he came back.

Minutes later, she heard some footsteps. As she peeped through a hole, she saw nothing but red.

When the guard came back to pick her up, she immediately asked him what she saw. The guard said there was a ghost that walked at night, only at a specific hour. What she just saw was the ghost’s eye, said to be colored red.

College of Human Kinetics (aka gym)

The UP Pep Squad—cheerdancers and drummers alike— often train in the gym until late at night.

Once, when the gym was locked up for the night, four cheerdancers who were standing outside the building heard someone dribbling a basketball on the hardcourt.

Another story says that there were three drummers preparing to leave the gym one night when they heard three loud beats of the bass drums. They looked around, wondering where the sound came from. When they looked up at the second-floor windows, they saw a girl in white with drumsticks in hand.

Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater in Palma Hall

The Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater on the second floor of Palma Hall is where Marita is believed to reside. Marita was allegedly once a theater actress. In her last scene, she was lowered to the stage with the help of a harness. When it unexpectedly snapped, she was choked and tragically died.

These days, she sometimes appears in theater productions when there are a lot of cast members frolicking in one scene. Marita can easily be identified; when everybody on stage is running, she is merely walking or floating across the stage.

UP campus ‘Ikot’ jeepney

Once, a girl boarded a jeepney late at night, bound for one of the campus dorms. She caught the driver’s gaze in the rearview mirror, and told him where she wanted to be dropped off.

They trundled through the dark and silent campus, but the route he took was not one she recognized. Afraid for her safety, she was wary throughout the ride. Finally, the jeepney made a turn, and she found herself just across the street from her dormitory.

Mildly shaken, she hurried to leave the jeep, but the driver stopped her, telling her that as soon as she got home, she should take off her clothes and burn them. He explained that he took a detour to ward off the evil spirit that must have been following her. “Pagtingin ko kasi kanina sa salamin,” the driver said, “wala kang ulo.”

Vinzons Hall

It was the end of the semester, and a student was reading a book while waiting for his friend at the ground floor of Vinzons Hall. Since the area was busy and crowded with students celebrating semestral break, he went up to the second floor so he could read in peace.

All of a sudden, he heard a woman eerily gasp for breath from the men’s comfort room. He was about to check it out when his friend called out his name from the end of the corridor. The student then asked his friend if he had heard anything. His friend said no, and laughed at him because he seemed to be imagining things.

Before they left, he decided to relieve himself in one of the comfort room’s cubicles. After some time he felt someone patting and smoothing his head. He looked up and saw a girl hanging from her neck. Her complexion was gray from the lack of oxygen, and her eyes were almost bulging out of their sockets.

Grazing his head were the soles of her dangling feet. He hurriedly ran out with his zipper still undone, and he swore never to use that comfort room again.

Now and then, students and faculty members in Vinzons Hall see a girl walking along the corridors of its second floor, especially during eerie hours of the night.
