The UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies (UST CCWLS), with the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and National Book Store, will host the lecture and book launch of Marivi Soliven’s “The Mango Bride” (Penguin Books, 2013), on July 30, 2 p.m., at the Tanghalang Teresita Quirino, G/F Benavides Bldg., University of Santo Tomas, España St., Sampaloc, Manila.
Marivi Soliven has taught creative writing at the University of the Philippines and the University of California at San Diego. Short stories and essays from her 15 books have appeared in anthologies and textbooks on creative writing.
Among her previously published books are “Suddenly Stateside,” “Sexy Sassy Singularly Happy,” which are best-selling essay collections; and “Spooky Mo,” a collection of funny horror stories, all three published by Milflores Publishing.
She was awarded the Hedgebrook writing residency in August 2012 for her work on “The Mango Bride” and the novel’s advocacy of women’s issues. Prior to its publication, the novel won the grand prize for the novel in English at the 2011 Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.
Soliven is married to the literary scholar John Blanco, who teaches at the University of California at San Diego, and has one daughter.
The book launch is open to creative writers and literary enthusiasts.
