Sentimental Attachment is the theme of the new exhibit of artist Anna de Leon, which opens Nov. 9 at Galerie Francesca in SM Megamall.
“Strings Attached” features fascinating new works showing the advancement of De Leon’s techniques and use of new motifs.
The show is partly a tribute to the artist’s brother, who will be getting married later in the year. With many of her friends and family flying in from different parts of the world to celebrate this affair, it’s no wonder the artist has feelings of elation and nostalgia.
An interior designer by training, with a degree from the University of Santo Tomas, De Leon has used her skills to create and dedicate a unique work for her brother: a chair titled “Keeper’s Chair,” with a painting on the backrest.
It is a painting that uses the artist’s signature “egg” motif, which alludes to the concept of nurturing support. It is a wonderful example of the artist’s ability to create artworks from various forms—in this case, a chair—while staying true to her own unique sensibilities and capabilities as an interior designer.
An example of this is “Strings Attached.” A floral piece, it evokes the strong passion the artist feels. The composition is enhanced by the texture, combining to create a refreshingly unique artwork.
“Time and Tied” shows the artist’s sense of humor. It uses texturized meta-objects to create the appearance of a clock, set at a quarter of 12. Here, the artist uses the egg motif to symbolize the emotional resonance of attachment, held together by a piece of string.
