The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) will no longer extend the Sept. 30 deadline for registration of online businesses. After prolonging the cutoff date for more than two months due to quarantine movement restrictions, the BIR will go after unregistered online businesses starting today.
As of Wednesday morning, there are at least 7,262 online-based businesses that were able to register. BIR Deputy Commissioner Arnel Guballa said that the agency will impose penalties similar to those given to tax-delinquent firms.
“How to monitor and apprehend [unregistered online businesses] are on the table,” says Guballa. However, he did not disclose what specific steps the BIR would undertake and instead notes that they are “crafting a methodology.”
The BIR is yet to determine how many online businesses are operating in the country, including the amount of tax revenues that can be collected from them. The agency is looking to fully implement its project called online registration and update system through which all new taxpayers (personal or corporate) can register.
