The Best-Dressed–and the best stressed | Lifestyle.INQ

One has to have beautiful style and good pedigree, civic-mindedness and a wow personality to be invited to Manila’s 12 Best Dressed event,” said designer Eddie Baddeo at the Philippine Cancer Ball last Thursday at Makati Shang’s Rizal Ballroom.

Standout beauties were Cris Albert in lavender Chantilly lace and pleated chiffon by couture legend Auggie Cordero, and Sheila Romero in a Peter Max cutout formal by Rajo Laurel, her throat dripping with diamonds by Miladay.

The presentation went without a hitch, until one of the winners, Len Olbes, had a wardrobe malfunction at the fashion show cum awards presentation. Olbes fell flat on her face. Thank God it was only a sprain on her wrist, Olbes would say afterward, and not a broken hip bone as some had speculated.

This incident brings to light the lengths (tricky mermaid tails) and heights (7-inch killer heels) some women would dare wear to be deemed “best-dressed.” It’s quite dangerous, what with blinding spotlights, a tricky catwalk adding to the potential pitfalls.

If supermodel Kate Moss can trip and fall on her tush on the ramp, so can we. For stage appearances, always choose outfits that are couture-sure, elegantly simple, no-fuss and no frills. Remember what Andy Warhol said: “Fashion may be hazardous to your health.”
