Veteran visual artist Romeo E. Gutierrez will hold his 30th solo exhibit, “Figurative Abstraction,” at the Art Asia Gallery of SM Megamall, July 2-16.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines Encyclopedia for the Arts takes note of Gutierrez’s achievement:
“Gutierrez achieved recognition for his seriously deliberated compositions that attempted to reconcile abstraction and figuration in an essentially Philippine sensibility. He developed the tendency of breaking down forms along cubistic concepts but through transparent layers of color. By the mid-1970s to the early 1980s, he had evolved tightly knit compositions, transforming genre themes into stylized overlapping layers of planes with grainy texture enhanced by embossment. This grainy feel and his undulating lines and monochromatic hues were recognized as his personal innovations.”
A long-time practicing artist, Gutierrez also became a fine arts professor at the College of the Holy Spirit on Mendiola, Manila.
Opening cocktails will be on July 2 at 6 p.m. Art Asia Gallery is at the Artwalk, L/4, SM Megamall, Bldg. A, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City.
