MANILA, Philippines—Don’t be fooled by food products promising a sexier you without diet and exercise.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday warned the public against the claims of such products, particularly the Optrimax Plum Delite, which it found to be carrying false weight-loss and diet advertisement claims on the Internet and its website.
In an advisory, the FDA said Optrimax Plum Delite Pickled Plum with Probiotics and Green Tea Mix was not registered with the agency as a weight-loss drug product but was approved only as fit for human consumption.
According to the FDA, Optrimax Plum Delite was registered with the agency merely as a food product under Category II (FR-94883), informing the public that FDA-approved processed food products should not be carrying any therapeutic claims in their advertisements.
“The FDA monitored the websites www.plumdelite.com and OLX.com and found that the websites are being used to advertise, promote and offer for sale Optrimax Plum Delite with false claims,” the advisory said.
A check of the website showed Optrimax Plum Delite promising prospective buyers that it would cause them to lose weight by “flushing the pounds” in a matter of 10 days.
“Experience the amazing secret of how you can lose weight with no diet plan, no exercise, no side effects, 100 percent guaranteed safe and effective,” the ad on the website stated.
According to the website, Optrimax Plum Delite is a whole plum “specially pickled with probiotics, green tea and Pu-er tea powder,” which makes it a good source of fiber that promotes an “excellent healthy bowel movement”.
The website also featured testimonials from consumers claiming to have lost weight by using the product.
“To claim that the use of Optrimax Plum Delite is ’the right way to lose weight without diet and exercise’ is false and deceiving since [it] is not a weight-loss drug product,” the FDA said.
It also pointed out that the advertisement, promotion and sale of such product was an outright violation of the provisions of Republic Act No. 3720 as amended by Republic No. Act 9711.
