MANILA, Philippines—For its final offering this 39th season, Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas stages “Bilanggo ng Pag-ibig,” an innovative piece largely based on Jean Genet’s last major book “Un Captif Amoureux (Prisoner of Love)”. The piece is written by Rody Vera and directed by José Estrella.
“Bilanggo ng Pag-ibig” is an adaptation of Genet’s masterpiece “Un Captif Amoureux (Prisoner of Love)”. Genet’s final opus is a lyrical and philosophical voyage to the bloody intersection of oppression, terror, and desire at the heart of the contemporary world.
The play, then, seeks to understand and portray Genet’s imagination as well as his controversial insights on revolution, betrayal and deceit, homosexuality, violence, and love. “Bilanggo ng Pag-ibig,” therefore, is a response to Genet’s daring claim and provocation: “The end pursued by revolution is the discovery of beauty.”
“Bilanggo ng Pag-ibig” features Melvin Lee and Jojo Cayabyab as Jean Genet; with Tess Jamias and Dolly De Leon alternating as Leila Shahid. Joining the cast are Peewee O’Hara, JC Santos, Tarek El Tayech, Brian Sy, Paul Cedrick Juan, Silvester Bagadiong, Virgilio Balanon, Jomel Reyes, Norbs Portales, Miela Sayo and the Dulaang UP Ensemble.
The artistic staff is composed of Ed Lacson Jr (assistant direction and dramaturgy), Barbie Tan-Tiongco (lights), Lex Marcos and Mark Dalacat (set), J Victor Villareal (sound), Carlo Pagunaling (costume), JM Cabling (movement), Sigmund Pecho (puppetry and graphics), and Jon Lazam (video).
The play runs from February 11 to March 1, 2015 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd Floor, Palma Hall, U.P. Diliman.
